The Western Dirt Racing Association returned to Thunder Mountain Speedway as the clouds were rolling in on the luckiest day of the year, 7/7/07, Saturday night. Twelve Super Dirt Late Models were in the pits, as new track owner Sean Gibbs welcomed the WDRA back to Olathe.
The track saluted the man who built the track with every car in the pits coming out for a 4 wide salute, and the reving of the high powered engines in the memory of the man who brought racing to the mountains.
The Late Model drivers drew their pills to determine the heat line ups, and the pill draws mixed up the cars nicely to make for some exciting heat race action.
Heat One found Rifle, Colorado's Michael Wright on the pole, with Rookie Kyle Hill on the front row outside, having repaired his broken transmission from his last outing. The checkered flag was taken once again by the 75B of Jeep Berry, from his fifth place starting poisition, followed by Kyle Hill and Jesse Dimick from Price, UT.
Heat Two lined up with the #05 of Gary Dechant of North Glen, CO, making his first trip with the WDRA, on the pole and Helper, Utah's Ron Lengel on the outside. Heat 2 was won by the 3C of Curt Daniels coming from the 2nd row outside, with Gary Dechant in second and the 14m of Dean Moore in third.
The 4 lap Pole Dash decided the top 4 feature starting spots with Berry once again starting on the pole and Daniels on the outside, the second row would see Gary Dechant on the inside and Kyle Hill next to him.
As the Feature rolled onto the track, a 4 wide salute was given to the fans as the track was worked into racing condition. The feature was a battle all the way through the field as the green flag was thrown and went caution free for the first 18 laps until a 3 wide collision flattened tires on Kyle Hill's #47 machine and the #29A of Jason Davis. Kyle was able to get the tire changed, and a second caution on the restart allowed him to return to the back of the pack. After a few attempts, the final 7 laps were completed with Jeep Berry again dominating the field and winning his 6th straight feature. Coming in second was the #05 of Gary Dechant and Dean Moore in third. Corey Smith had another come from the back run to finish 4th with Wellington, Utah's Mike McGinn in 5th. Curt Daniels, Michael Wright, Ron Lengel, Kyle Hill and Andy Hill rounded out the Top 10.
The WDRA will be on the road to Vernal, Utah and the Diamond Mountain Speedway next. Everyone will be working hard to be the next driver in victory circle and Jeep will be looking to go 6 for 6 and remain unbeaten.
