(Vernal, UT) The Western Dirt Racing
Association Super Dirt Latemodels visited the Diamond in the rough in
Dinosaurland, otherwise known as
Vernal, UT, just west
of the Dinosaur National
Monument in northeastern Utah. Fifteen WDRA late model drivers
trekked from throughout the central Rocky Mountains to pay a visit to
Diamond Mountain Speedway, a track that is in the second year since it's
rebirth in 2006, to give the race fans a show worthy of the WDRA's Rocky
Mountain Mayhem slogan.
By the time heat one rolled onto the smooth high-banked 1/3 mile track, the
night had already claimed it's first casualty, as Heat 1 Polesitter Kyle
Hill cracked his transmission housing during hot laps, and loaded up early.
Kyle's misfortune was
Grand
Junction,
CO 29A's Racing Jason Davis's good luck as he inherited the pole, with 71
Andy Hill on the outside. The green flag flew and they were off. Heat 1 was
won by Dean Moore, running his new 2007 Rayburn, G.A.M. Racing engines 14m
for the first time. Moore was followed to the checkered flag by Davis with
98G Steve Gray coming in third. As the cars ran the cool down lap, the night
took it's second casualty when third place Gray's motor went up in steam and
smoke. Coming in fourth was the 27 of Michael McGinn and Bob Cook rounding
out the top five.
Heat 2 found the 3c piloted by Curt Daniels on the pole with Aurora, CO
driver Terry Boushee on the outside. Terry traveled over 350 miles to make
this race with the WDRA. Daniels attempted to hold off a hard charging Jeep
Berry, who took the lead with 2 laps to go with a perfectly executed slide
job going into turn two. Berry and Daniels were followed to the line by
Terry Boushee(boo-she), Greg Scott and Greely, CO's Dan Shepherd.
The passing points set up a 4 lap pole dash with Berry outgunning Moore for
the feature's pole, and Curt Daniels taking the inside of the second row in
the feature over Jason Davis.
The WDRA Late Models were supported by the Open-wheeled modifieds, the
Street stocks, Pro stocks, and the Legend Dwarfs, who all put on a great
show.
For the 25 lap feature, 13 late models and one modified lined up for the
green (the modified was to ward of the superstitions some drivers have of
running a 13 car race, and left once the green was dropped) the grandstand
filling crowd was ready for a great race. 3 time feature winner Jeep Berry
hit the low grove as defend WDRA points champ Dean Moore worked the high
side as they roared around the track. As the circuits ticked off. Berry was
able to hold off Moore's efforts and remain perfect for the season's
features by collecting his 4th feature win of the season. Berry
was followed by Moore, Daniels finished third, with Michael McGinn fourth
and Racin Jason in fifth. Sixth place was filled by Boushee, and the race
long battle for 7th, 8th and ninth end up with 15 Corey Smith, who over came
a bad fuel pump that caused him to miss his heat, over Rifle, CO's Michael
Wright and Price, UT's Jesse Dimick. Bob Cook of
Helper, UT, had an
excellent race to round out the top ten.
The WDRA win be racing next on July 7th as they travel back to
Olathe, CO to race at
Thunder Mountain Speedway.
