Aztec, N.M. (Aug. 30)
(Aztec, NM) With the crash fest of Friday night over, 16 Super Dirt Late
Models were able to return to Aztec Speedway for the second night and race
for the $2500 to win 40 lap feature. After heavy rains fell in the overnight
hours, the track prep crew did a fantastic job of getting the sandy soil
whipped into racing shape for the evening. Temps were in the upper 80's
and the sun was shining as the fans began to arrive for the second night
of racing at the 1/3 mile high banked speedway. No newcomers showed to
compete for the prize money as many were expecting.
Heat one hit the track with the #47 of Kyle Hill on the pole. The track was
still wet as the race started with Mark Myers leading the pack and Jeep Berry
giving chase. The only caution in the race came when Jason Davis lost the hood
from the car he borrowed from Dean Moore. Myers held the lead for 6 laps on
the high side as Berry kept trying to run the low side. On the seventh lap,
Myers bobbled in turn 3 and Berry shot under to take the lead. Davis finished
in third. Kyle Hill lost the motor in his #47 GRT a few laps into the heat race.
Heat two came out with the rebuilt #93 of Terry Boushee of Aurora, CO on the
pole. This heat was also a fast heat that was caution free for the 8 laps.
Curt Daniels from Paonia, CO went from last place to take the win over Boushee
on the last 2 laps. The 5B from Edgewood, NM driven by Butch Reid came in third
place.
Heat three rolled out with Ron Lengel of Price, UT piloting his purple 49 on
the pole. Once the green flag fell, local driver Jeff Davis jumped out to the
front, quickly followed by the 69 of John Aragon. Davis took the checkers with
Aragon right behind him. The 38H of Marc Herrera finished in 3rd.
The late models took the track as the last race of the night with John Aragon
and Jeff Davis in the front row. The driver's gave the fans a 4-wide salute to
thank them for coming out to the races and got ready to race. As the green flag
fell, Jeff Davis took the lead for the first 3 laps. The 3C of Daniels overtook
Davis on lap four and began to built a lead. The 75B of Jeep Berry began to hunt
down Daniels and they were racing side by side for the next 10 laps. Berry slid
under Daniels going into turn one on lap 13 to take the lead. Berry was set up at
that point and began to check out on the field. The 14M of Dean Moore dropped out
on lap 14 with a flat left front. All other drivers went caution free for the
entire 40 laps with Jeep lapping to 6th place to take home the $2500 first prize.
Jeep swept the weekend taking home $3500 after finishing first last night,
finishing with a broken fan and a damaged radiator.
